Nuclear energy basics are an atom being split into two lighter atoms, for a net loss of mass. But, the mass isn’t really lost. Instead an enormous quantity of energy is morphed. 3. Minimizing Air Pollution. With the most commonly used methods we utilize today to harness energy, nuclear energy is far more beneficial to the current climate conditions. The nuclear energy environmental effects are significantly lower.
4. Thorium. Between statistics and mathematics, we only have enough uranium the fuel power plants for the next 80 years. But a new element has been getting some positive attention, with greater benefits of being better on the climate and environment. We are referring to thorium. Other countries, such as China and Russia are fast approaching the switch from uranium to thorium.
5. Denser Energy. Because it is much denser than traditional energy sources, resources are reduced in using nuclear energy.
Nuclear Power Disadvantages:
1. Catastrophic Accident Potential. As history has shown, Chernobyl and more recently in Japan, accidents and malfunctions can happen. When they do, it can be devastating to people and the environment in the event nuclear waste is combined with accidental circumstances.
2. Radioactive waste. Nuclear power plants emit little to no carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, Although, during the process of nuclear mining, waste management can be radioactive and harmful to the atmosphere and people.
Clean Coal Energy
Coal in general doesn’t have a very good reputation. Though it is quite abundant, it does emit CO2 into the atmosphere, which negatively impacts the climate. The idea behind clean coal energy is to strip away the CO2 before or after it is burned, and keep it contained to be used elsewhere.
Clean Coal Energy Pros:
1. Ample supplies.
3. High load factor for continuous power.
4. Industry is already established and mature.
5. Potential to clean and produce with low carbon.
6. Ability to be converted into a liquid gas to burn cleaner.
7. Clean coal technology is being realized and widely used in China.
8. Low capital investment in comparison to gas or nuclear energy sources.
Clean Coal Energy Cons:
1. Coal has a finite supply and the coal is not renewable.
2. Coal is the main contributor in CO2 and a leading cause in global warming.
3. Negative health, social and environmental consequences for coal mining.
4. Additional negative results can arise from coal use and mining.
